How to Save 50-90% on Perfume and Cologne
My Deep Love for “Smell-Good,” (as my brother refers to it)…
I may not be your average, stereo-typical woman in most ways, but I do love one thing for sure – my perfume. I have what one would probably consider a slightly excessive collection of colognes, perfumes, and body sprays. What scent I wear almost completely depends on my mood for the day or if I am looking to get my husband’s attention. I think each of my bottles of scented bliss performs a different function. For example, if I am absolutely irritated and in the worst of moods, I might wear a more earthy or nature scent. If I am feeling sexy – I’ll likely wear a more musky scent because I’ve noticed my husband seems to really like that or Avon’s “Far Away”. (Every time I have ever put that one on, I get an immediate “Mmmm, you smell really good.” Regardless of my many moods (I am a woman, after all – there are hundreds of said moods), I have a scent to cover each one!
Over the years, I learned a little secret: finding a super fabulous bargain on perfume is all about the time of the year that you purchase it. I have two time periods in the year that I purchase my scents and almost always stick to that schedule as if it were my religion. “When exactly is that,” you ask? The last week of August – Early October and 1-4 weeks after Christmas! It does matter which stores you choose. You aren’t going to find the biggest bargains in your larger department stores, though you may get lucky. You want the smaller ones, especially in smaller towns, that don’t carry as big of a selection of perfume except for during the holiday season. My favorite stores to find these deep clearance discounts are K-Mart, Wal-Mart and Target. The reason is this: their shelf space comes at a premium. Each Fall and Holiday season, a wide range of new perfumes and colognes are introduced into the marketplace in order to cash in on the holiday sales rush. Holiday sales performance quite often will make or break a product – and the perfume industry is not excluded from this generality. If the product sells extremely well, the store will continue to re-stock the scent until its sales decline and giving space to that particular scent becomes less profitable. The straggling few that were not purchased by consumers then incrementally are marked down in price until the end of the back-to-school season the following year – when the stores will slash the prices 50-90% off in order to clear the shelf space for new product.
Today’s Amazing Scent Bargains…
This afternoon, I went to a K-Mart in a relatively small town called Leechburg, Pennsylvania. I actually had no intention whatsoever of purchasing any sort of scented product. I was actually just trying to burn some time away while our vehicle was being repaired. I was sort of just wandering the store while my mother-in-law and husband did the same. As I was strolling past the jewelry counter and noticing the jewelry was marked its common 50-70% off (K-mart has done that since I was a child), I noticed this towering 3-tier basket sort of sitting at the end of an isle. I normally skip these type of displays because the disorganization drives me insane, but being as I was trying to pass the time, I began to dig through it. Mostly, it consisted of make-up that had come out of the packaging or had damaged packaging. I then noticed there were several types of perfumes and colognes. Now, I had eagle-eye vision. I wanted to find a bargain!
The very first scent I located was a unisex cologne that had photographs of Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom all over the box (Keeping Up with the Kardashians is my guilty, secret but now not-so-secret pleasure.) My interest was completely peaked. It was called “Unbreakable Bond” by Khloe and Lamar (who are now, ironically, divorced). The regular K-Mart price on this cologne was $29.99. The clearance price? $4.29!!!!!!! Score! That went immediately into the cart. I noticed there was one more left. I debated buying a second because I had never smelled the scent. I didn’t want to end up with a second one if the first one smelled disgusting. I decided to buy just the one.
I continued to dig for a possible second perfume purchase and came across what I felt was the big score: Givenchy’s “π” cologne for men! I hadn’t actually smelled it but I just knew in my bones…if Givenchy made it, it’s got to smell fabulous and I love when my husband smells fabulous! The regular K-Mart price for this french-made cologne: $59.99. The discounted price: $8.69! Seriously!? I was thrilled! I was actually quite low on money and decided maybe I would just get the one bottle “Unbreakable Bond” by Khloe and Lamar. I was still excited when we completed our purchase at the check-out, though I still had Givenchy and the second bottle of “Unbreakable Bond” on my mind.
The moment we got into my mother-in-law’s SUV, I busted open the package of the “Unbreakable Bond” and within seconds had sprayed myself, fell in love with it and made everyone in the car smell my wrist to ask if they liked it. Knowing full well that my opinion would not change if they didn’t like it, they agreed. Everyone liked it. I was still debating going back to buy the second bottle and decided I would just wait and think about it over dinner at the local Kings Family Diner. (For the record, my mother-in-law and my husband both thought I should go back and get it.)
Well, obviously – I didn’t get the $4 price tag out of my head! The moment we left the restaurant after dinner – we drove straight back to K-mart and bought the second bottle of the “Unbreakable Bond” as well as the Givenchy “π”. I was driving, so I asked my husband, Jason, to open the Givenchy as fast as possible in order for me to sniff it. I just have to say, that it was every bit of the musky perfect sexy scent that I expected it to be!
I absolutely love it and I am over the moon that I just purchased 3 bottles of amazing perfume for a grand total of $17.27 – a savings of $102.70 from the regular K-mart price of $119.97!
Now, THAT is how to save 50-90% on perfume and cologne! Be patient. Shop a couple months before Christmas, but after the back-to-school shopping and again in January. My biggest tip is to stock up! Purchase as many bottles as you can afford! The more perfume you have, the more you can express yourself through your scent! Who says you have to pay retail to do it!?
